Connotations and Denotations

Apple
Represents a brand of technology
Only one meaning
Its an American company
Young and older generations wouldn't necessarily understand its meaning

Citreon
Represents a brand of car manufacturer
Only one meaning
Apply more to teenage and adult generations as young children don't usually take an interest in cars

Gender Symbol
Represents the male gender
Reminds me off dating websites
Applies to adult generation

McDonalds
Fast food brand
Only one meaning
Any generation would be familiar with McDonalds as it is advertised everywhere

No Ironing
Only applies to adults or cleaners if in a younger generation
Only one meaning
Appears on clothing

No Entry
All generations could be aware of the presence and meaning of this sign as it could be used in all environments
Only one meaning
Appears on roads, schools, toilets, public places etc

Same Gender toilets
Appears in schools
All generations will be aware of this as it is a day to day occurrence
Appears on signs, toilet doors/entrances and in public places such as schools

The Rolling Stones
Appeals to the older generation or fans of the ban the rolling stones
Appears on merchandised clothing, posters etc
Only has one meaning

Olympic rings
Every colour on all countries flags is represented by these rings
Known as only the Olympic rings
Only has one meaning

Union Jack
Represents four countries (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales)
Known worldwide by all generations
Only has one meaning

Star of David
Known in Hebrew, so wouldn't be known by anyone not interested in History or Religion
One meaning only
Usually of a black or blue colour

Scales
Significant to law, so not many people would recognise it
Not very well known
Only one meaning
